Job Description — Packer / Bakery Assistant

Job title: Packer / Bakery Assistant Reporting to: Head of Operations Working with: Operations team, bakers, delivery drivers


The role

The Packer / Bakery Assistant is responsible for preparing and packing pastry and bread orders ready for delivery or sale, and for leaving the bakery space clean and ready for the next shift.


Core duties

Packing and slicing

  • Sort packing slips and prepare packaging (fold cake boxes, ready delivery crates)
  • Finish pastries for delivery or sale (e.g. dust Danishes and almond croissants with icing sugar)
  • Slice bread and pack to order
  • Pack and label all pastry and bakery produce, arranged by delivery route
  • Liaise with bakery and delivery staff regarding substitutions, shortfalls, or missing items
  • Liaise with operations staff regarding packaging requirements

Cleaning

  • Wash and put away remaining dishes and trays; run clean/power-off cycle on dishwasher
  • Clean sink basins and top up detergents and sponges as needed
  • Wipe and disinfect all work surfaces (stainless-steel benches and shelves)
  • Sweep and mop all accessible floor space using the scrubber/dryer (bakehouse, Unit 13 oven room, pastry room, toilets, walk-in fridges and freezers)
  • Remove general waste and recycling to outside bins
  • Arrange the bakery in readiness for the morning packing shift (bread/pastry trolleys to pastry room or fridge, packed pastries stacked on dollies, wire rack in front of bread stacks)

End-of-shift handover

  • Liaise with the operations manager or head baker about any equipment problems or materials needed
  • Ensure the bakery is left clean, tidy and set up correctly before leaving

General responsibilities

  • Clock in and out accurately for every shift using BrightHR
  • Work safely and use appropriate PPE at all times
  • Report any concerns, faults or safety issues to a line manager immediately
  • Monitor stock levels and flag low supplies to the operations team
  • Work respectfully and cooperatively with all staff
  • Maintain a clean and pleasant work environment throughout the shift

Additional tasks (when requested)

  • Turning on provers
  • Checking freezer stock
  • Shifting trolleys from fridge to pastry room
  • Assisting with ad-hoc bakery tasks as directed by the operations manager or head baker

Contract type

Most packers are employed on a permanent part-time contract (Template A) with a minimum guaranteed shift payment. Truly seasonal or one-off workers may be engaged on a Casual Worker Agreement (Template B). Your contract type will be confirmed in your offer letter.
